OverviewDifferent skin types have different needs, which is why understanding your skin type is a crucial core step in skincare. Your skin type can for example affect the kind off cleanser or moisturizer that will suit you better according to the ingredients. So, knowing your skin type could help you avoid products that are actually bad for your skin. Now we know why it is so important, let’s get to the most important question: how do you know what skin type you have?
*It is important to know that your skin type can change over time. And it can also variate with the seasons.
The existing skin types are: dry, normal, combination, oily and sensitive
With 2 easy tests you can know your type!
Test 1: dry, normal or oily skin?
With the first test we can find out whether you have dry normal or oily skin
Checklist: Check the list and score how many applies to you
- After cleansing, even if you don't put anything on, it doesn't feel tight
- When you don't have makeup on, you can see your pores
- Your makeup doesn't last on for a long time, so you have to retouch every 2 hours
- If you use moisturizer or a pack, you break out more
- You have a lot of black- and white heads around your nose
- Rather than wrinkles or dead skin, you can see the oiliness of your skin first
- If you wipe your face with a tissue, you can see oil on your tissue
- You use oil paper at least 3 times a day
- Your T-zone is always shiny
- You prefer light gel type products rather than oily ones
- Even if you wash your hair every day, you head itches & you have dandruff
- If you don't wash your hair every day, it gets oily
1 – 4 checked: | Dry Skin |
5 – 8 checked: | Normal Skin |
9 – 12 checked: | Oily Skin |
If your result ended up being oily or dry skin, you may actually have a combination skin or sensitive skin. To find out please proceed with the second test.
Test 2: combination and sensitive skin
With the second test we can find out whether you have combination or sensitive skin.
This time we will not be using a checklist. For the second test we need to observe our skin.
- After cleansing the skin, wait for 1 hour before putting any products on your face. After a 1 hour, take a few oil paper and let’s check the amount of oil on your forehead, chin, cheeks and nose by putting one paper on each area.
If all the oil papers fall off your face | Dry skin |
If all the oil papers stay on your face | Oily skin |
If the oil papers only stay on your nose, forehead and chin | Combination skin |
If the oil paper only sticks for a few minutes and then fall off | Sensitive skin |
